Thursday,
October 5: A visit to Five Star Laser
Back from vacation, but with many unseen titles yet in a pile near
the DVD player, teetering on the brink of falling.
Only had time for a visit to one DVD store, the retail outlet of Five
Star Laser, which also has an online store which is undergoing a major
overhaul. The retail store is tucked into an all-Asian strip mall. The
Asian sales clerk immediately asked "Hong Kong movies?", pointed out
the aisles to me and offered to help me find titles I was looking for.
I enjoyed looking at hundreds (well, maybe 100 to 200, I didn't count)
of HK DVDs in the flesh, so to speak. I am sure they were in some kind
of order (perhaps by Chinese characters?), but it was fun to explore.
This was my first visit to an Asian DVD store (they are scarce in North
Texas), and my only disappointment was that most of the titles were
not discounted (the online
Five Star Laser has a good selection but relatively few sale items).
I ended up buying a few (Double
Tap, Expect
the Unexpected, The
Longest Night, and Armor of God 2).
My goal is to get caught up on movies in order to have my appetite
thoroughly whetted for the theatrical release on October 20 of Jackie
Chan's Drunken Master II (retitled for the U.S. as Legend of the Drunken
Master).
