Tuesday, October 24: Do you like cold pizza?

An old saying is, "A day late and a dollar short." That sums up my current situation: a lot of work in the last week and a lot more to come. My biggest client is preparing for the launch of their cornerstone product at Comdex (a huge computer trade show here in the United States) in about three weeks. Little time will be left for sleeping, heating up cold pizza . . . or watching HK movies. Aargh! (a strangling sound of moaning emerges from my throat) I like to keep busy, but this is ridiculous.

My big surprise was to be named site of the week by Love and Bullets. I still have a long way to go to achieve their level, or that of my other favorite sites, but it's fun to try.

The Legend of Drunken Master opened in 1,327 theaters in the U.S. and grossed $3.7 million, enough to place it #5 on the moneymaker weekend list. Not too bad considering the rather limited publicity and second-tier (if any) reviews printed by most major publications. It will be interesting to see how Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon performs when it opens in U.S. theaters in December, traditionally one of the fiercest and most competitive times of the year to debut.

I might mention here that the release dates for Once a Thief: Director's Cut (TV movie adaptation) and The Story of Ricky may not be accurate. These two have bounced around for a few weeks and I have no idea when they will actually arrive. The challenges faced by smaller distributors (in this case A-Pix and Media Blasters, respectively) are many. Also, I finally and reluctantly changed the release dates for A Better Tomorrow I and II to January 2001 (as initially reported by our friends at Love and Bullets, and then confirmed by Anchor Bay on their web site). Most of my release date information comes from scouring the Image Entertainment web site (which takes a long time to load on my slow 28.8 connection) and I have yet to see an official announcement of the date change appear there. Needless to say, I anxiously await these releases in particular. One day I will write up my "Personal History With HK Movies" and try to explain the effect A Better Tomorrow had on me and the reason why I named my site after it.

As usual, please feel free to send feedback, criticisms, etc.

Peter
