E D I T O R I A L
Monday,
November 20: A return and a shortened work week, hurrah!
My work took me to Las Vegas for Comdex, the biggest computer trade
show in America. It was a busy week, but the great part is that this
week, the American holiday Thanksgiving means I only have to work parts
of three days. I'm looking forward to catching up on watching and (re)viewing
a whole bunch of HK movies. Last week there were a large number of new
releases from Tai Seng, but I'm still working on what I bought two months
ago and still searching for a friendly Asian video store within a reasonable
driving distance.
I watched one American film recently. I really liked Frequency (a thriller
with heart) and the DVD made me wish that all Hong Kong films could
look and sound so good. I picked up Once a Thief, the TV version directed
by John Woo, for $5.00 (half-price). It's full frame and the video looks
very good. The sound level is set so high, though, that I nearly blew
out my ears. The movie blew away my friends back in 1995 (I missed it
on TV), but watching the first 15 minutes the other day, I felt . .
. sad. It looked like a blueprint for M:I 2. More on that topic, and
my self-involved continuing reevaluation of HK cinema, in the coming
weeks.
As usual, please feel free to send feedback, criticisms, etc.
