Thursday, April 26: Hong Kong Film Awards — Who Won?

The 20th Hong Kong Film Awards were handed out on Sunday, April 29. Last week I listed my picks; herein I have amended the list to show who actually won.

Thanks to Sebastian Tse for posting the results at Mobius' Home Video Forum Asian Cinema Discussion board. Congratulations to all the winners!

(My picks were made without having seen Durian, Durian, Twelve Nights, Time and Tide, China Strike Force, or Summer Holiday.)

Best movie: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, In the Mood for Love, and Jiang Hu: The Triad Zone were all good films that fell short of what they could have been. I can't pick between them, so that leaves Needing You - certainly less ambitious than the other films but it fires on all cylinders. Winner: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Best director: As I wrote in my review for Juliet in Love: "Director Wilson Yip deserves credit for the unhurried pace that allows the drama to breathe and the audience to collect its thoughts as the plot presses forward to a (perhaps) inevitable and emotionally affecting conclusion." Winner: Ang Lee

Best screenplay: Chan Hing-Ka and Chin Siu-Wai for Jiang Hu: "The Triad Zone" - for taking an overworked genre and shaking it back and forth vigorously, both collapsing and exploding expectations. Winner: Fruit Chan for Durian, Durian

Best actor: Tony Leung Chiu-Wai for In the Mood for Love. His eyes told more about his character than the fractured writing and directing. Winner: Tony Leung Chiu-Wai

Best actress: Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Grace, fury, and forlorn longing personified. Winner: Maggie Cheung for In the Mood for Love

Best supporting actor: Francis Ng in 2000 A.D - for creating a character through his posture, body language, and diction. Winner: Francis Ng

Best supporting actress: Gigi Leung in A War Named Desire - playing against type, toting a gun, and still displaying convincing emotions. Winner: Cheng Pei Pei in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Best new performer: Haven't seen 4 of the 6 nominated performances, so I disqualify myself. Winner: Qin Hailu in Durian, Durian

Best cinematography: Keung Kwok-Man for A Fighter's Blues. He painted the flashback scenes with stark beauty and captured equivalent though different shades for the contemporary settings. Winner: Peter Pau for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Best action design: Yuen Wo-Ping for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon despite the fact that I haven't seen two of the nominations. It doesn't matter. Winner: Yuen Wo-Ping

Best film editing: Kwong Chi-Leung for Tokyo Raiders. Best job of covering up the fact that none of the principals can fight; MTV cut to a flamenco beat. Winner: William Chang for In the Mood for Love

Best art direction: William Chang Suk-Ping for In the Mood for Love. Evoked an entire era through color. Winner: William Chang

Best costume: William Chang Suk-Ping for In the Mood for Love. Yes, the obvious choice, for Maggie's cheongsams and Tony's suits. Winner: William Chang

Best sound effect: Tsang King-Cheung for Double Tap. The gunshots are still echoing in my head and reverberating in my chest cavity. Winner: Eugene Gearty for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Best original film score: Ronald Ng Lok-Shing for Lavender. Highly entertaining, enchanting, and romantic without resorting to saccharine arrangements. Winner: Tan Dun for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Best original film song: Moonlight Lover from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Don't remember any of the nominated songs but do remember Coco Lee's performance at the Academy Awards. Go ahead and call me shallow. Winner: Moonlight Lover

By the way, if you disagree (or, by chance, even agree) with any of my reviews, I will be glad to post your comments (with expletives deleted) on the forthcoming "What Other People Are Saying" page of this site.

Please feel free to e-mail me your comments, whether positive or negative.
