A Better Tomorrow

Coming out this week will be the film God of Gamble. It received a brief cinema release in Hong Kong at the end of April, and stars Dave Wong and Nadia Chan. It does not appear to be connected to Wong Jing's God of Gamblers series of films.

The Irresistible Piggies, a recent comedy, is described by retailer Sensasian as The Irresistible Women (!) when describing its VCD release.

Also of interest is a "bilingual" Hong Kong VCD release of My Sassy Girl. By that description, I assume it is the version recently re-released in Hong Kong cinemas, featuring a Cantonese dub with Miriam Yeung as the lead voice. The Korean DVD version is coded for Region 3, so this VCD (and perhaps DVD later?) may hold some interest.

While on the subject of non-Hong Kong films, the acclaimed animated film Spirited Away, from director Hayao Miyazaki, is due for release in a two-disk special edition DVD (coded Region 3) July 19. It is scheduled for a limited North American theatrical release in September.

July Hong Kong DVD News

Three more from the Troublesome Night series of horror films will be presented in all their DVD glory tomorrow.

Final Edge will also be released this week - still waiting to hear about this one.

Last week ended up being consumed by real life, which severely interfered with my ability to see all the local screenings I wanted to attend. But I was able to see the fascinating Pistol Opera, the so-so Black Rose Mansion, the terrific drama If You Were Young, and the quite interesting Harmful Insect. More comments to follow ... eventually.

The latest edition of Hong Kong Digital features new reviews plus an update of the 2001 Year End Overview. I love looking through the list, and not just because I was included in the survey of reviewers. It's helpful to have a "check list" of movies I haven't seen that may be worth a look. Thanks to John Charles for putting the issue together - and for the snazzy new look of his site.
