Background
1994 / 93 minutes
Directed by Lar Keung-Hung
Movie: plot, performances,
production, rating
The movie is superb, the fighting is expertly choreographed, and the
humor is well-done. It helps that much of the film is visually driven.
This is the last great movie Jackie has done and, considering his age
(now 46), it may be all there is as far as dynamic kung-fu/great stunts
action.
VCD: look, sound, subtitles,
and features
The VCD is the only way to see the film nowadays ($11.99 from YesAsia
and other retailers). I hate not being able to read so much of the subtitles
(tiny little white printing is not the way to go), and the compression
is, of course, far inferior to DVD, but lacking other alternatives I
recommend a purchase.
Can't wait for the DVD . . . some day. (Editor's note added 3/9/01:
That day finally arrived.)
Buy, rent, or pass?
Editor's note (added 3/9/01): Pass, even if you can find a copy (I
believe it is now out of print.) Get the Thakral
DVD if you can, or the Region 1 only Buena Vista version if you
prefer.
