The Road Home. (2000) Zhang Yimou's quiet and colorful tale of the courtship of a rural couple (bookended by the wife's black-and-white grief in the modern day) may be slight, but it's well made and does not overstay its welcome. In her debut, Zhang Ziyi is nearly unrecognizable as a determined pursuer of love. The Columbia/TriStar (coded for Region 1) DVD looks lush and sounds good. (08/12/02)

Beijing Bicycle. (2001) Directed by Wang Xiaoshuai. The backdrop is modern day China. A country lad, newly arrived in the city, gets a job as a bicycle courier. When his bike is stolen, he sets off in search of the thief. This film, though beautifully shot and well-acted, was incredibly infuriating to watch because it manipulates the audience with a mean spirit. Other reviewers have been much more positive, however. The Columbia/TriStar (coded for Region 1) DVD looks and sounds fine; the DVD cover shown here is for a two-disk Korean version from Starmax that includes the original soundtrack CD (the music is quite beautiful).
