Shogun and Little Kitchen (1992)

Ng Man Tat runs a restaurant in the courtyard of his tenement apartment. His uncle, Yuen Biao, helps out when his nephew is injured and becomes a celebrity thanks to his acrobatic approach as a cook. After he's hired away by a corporation, Ng Man Tat and the other tenants are left to try and fight off a nasty developer. Leon Lai lends a hand as a rich boy in hiding from his family.

Ronny Yu directed a very warm-hearted and appealing comedy that sneaks in a little social commentary about the oft-ignored and disenfranchised poor. The message must have been quite timely in a Hong Kong undergoing upheaval in the early 1990's.

For the DVD, Mei Ah decided to zoom in on a letterboxed print in order to fill the screen. The result is a severely cropped picture that also suffers from a below-average source print. The burned-in subtitles are sometimes cut off at the sides. Until an improved edition appears, this will have to do, but don't let that caveat keep you away. (08/24/02)
