With or Without You (1992)

Police detective Ming (Leon Lai) loses his gun during a drunken binge and attempts to recover it while romancing PR girl Tweedy (Rosamund Kwan). That's the gist of the first two-thirds of the slackly-paced story, which is enlivened by a gun battle, a chase on foot through speeding cars, and comic relief provided by Ming's partner (Ng Man Tat).

Things really heat up, though, when Tweedy's old boyfriend Prince (Jacky Cheung), a psychotic hitman, comes back to town. Then the action comes fast and furious (in sequences choreographed by Lam Moon Wa) in a very satisfying, only-in-Hong Kong way.

The Winson DVD quality is compromised by a poor source print, but the transfer is watchable and the audio (remixed for DD 5.1) decent. Letterboxed, with removable subtitles but no extras. (08/24/02)
