Where Everybody...

Sorry for the long interlude between posts, but I departed for greener work pastures at the beginning of December, and have been limited in what I've been able to see, Asian movie-wise. My most recent reviews have appeared at Twitch,...

AFI FEST 2005 Reviews

My reviews, posted at Twitch: SPL (Hong Kong) My initial reaction was "Zowie!!" The action is fierce and fabulous, the picture looks terrific -- neon-tinged primary colors dominate the palette -- and it's wrapped up in a classic police story....

Post Fest Mode

AFI FEST concluded this past Sunday. I saw 30 films, many quite good, and others not to my taste. Of the Asian films, SPL was the stand-out, but SUNFLOWER was extraordinarily powerful. I could admire the artistry of SHANGHAI DREAMS...

Off to See the Wizard

No Asian films out on DVD in Region 1 this week. American Film Market starts today, so check the trades for deals daily; all the reports are that this is expected to be a very busy market. AFI FEST starts...

Pressed for a Festival

Happy to say I'll be covering AFI FEST 2005 for Twitch. Several of my advance reviews have already been posted, with more to come. Earlier in the month I reviewed the fine Japanese police drama THE SUSPECT, the latest entry...

Weather, Weather, Weather

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. I was unexpectantly abducted by aliens while driving (see picture), and they didn't have Internet access. ... Alien abductions aside, I was under the weather last week, soaked up to the gills in...

Timing is Everything

Updates will be limited this week, as I am preparing to leave Chicago, Illinois, and head to Dallas, Texas, for a while before returning to Los Angeles, California. Though I've watched a lot of movies the past three months, relatively...

Five Years and Counting

Started this site about five years ago, looking to patch a hole on the information highway about Hong Kong movies. Ever since, I've shifted back and forth in the territory that I've covered, though always concentrating on the Asian...

The Beast Must Be Fed

My six-week sojourn in Texas is coming to an end, and where I go from here -- I just don't know. But this return to a daily workplace, after months of unemployment, has been sobering -- financially mandatory and...

Thailand Nets Grizzly Fish

This appears to have absolutely nothing to do with movies, but bear with me. "Fishermen in northern Thailand have netted a fish as big as a grizzly bear, a 646-pound Mekong giant catfish," according to Science Blog (link via Slashdot)....

First Summer Friday

My home is in Los Angeles, but I haven't been there for a month. A temp job took me to San Francisco for a few days and then to Dallas for a few weeks. Curiosity and a job possibility took...

My Little Detour

Somewhere between Ludlow and Needles I faced a crossroads and a split-second decision that could change my life. Exactly 56 miles westward, I had passed by a rest area and gas station with the clearly noted sign: "Next services 56...

The Great Unwashed

My last night in San Francisco (this time -- I definitely want to return, something this Los Angeles native never thought he'd say) and I was abandoned by my work colleagues, and fell asleep in my hotel room in the...

Where Am I?

The nasty beast that is fiscal responsibility has reared its ugly head, and I find I must devote nearly the entire month of June to work that will actually pay me money. My latest contract called for me to drive...

I had several very good reasons prepared as the explanation for the lack of updates, but now they all seem pointless to relate....

Blue Skies Are But a Memory

"With each day that rain pours down in Los Angeles, the remembrance of bright sunshine recedes. The only bright spot is that the skies will open up soon enough and banish the raindrops." Site News: After working at AFI FEST...

Dog Days of Summer

Life Inside: The mercury soared past 100 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday, causing me to draw the blinds, turn on the fans, and watch screener tape after screener tape. Screener tapes are those that have been submitted by producers, sales agents, or...

The Fireworks Are Over

Cinema Scene: The weekend was dominated by SPIDER-MAN 2, as expected, while FAHRENHEIT 9/11 also performed quite well as it doubled the number of screens on which it was playing. Rounding out the Top 5 were WHITE CHICKS, DODGEBALL, and...

What's Happening?

Because I was late with payments (I think), my web site has gone wonky. (This is why I hate being poor, that and all those nasty phone calls I get from India when I don't make my credit card...

Ah, the early days of spring...

Alas, the past few weeks have been a nightmarish mixture of pain, heartache, and sorrow. Mixed in, of course, with moments of happiness and contentment. Someday perhaps I'll drag all these personal things out into the light. Until then,...

The Song Remains the Same

I've been doing more apologizing than updating lately but, unfortunately, it's been unavoidable. I will update on Thursday morning, however, with the list of Asian films that will be playing at AFI FEST here in Los Angeles. Hopefully I can...
